Ron Isley & Lauryn Hill Get ‘Close’

Now that Ron Isley is steady on the promotional train for his new album Mr. I, there is yet another track for us to get the chance to judge. As over I am with Lauryn Hill's stage antics, there is just no denying her talent, especially when it comes to her melismatic vocal theatrics. "Close To You," a remake of "(They Long To Be) Close To You" one of my all-time songs by The Carpenters, is simply divine. Both of these singers have well-matched voices and are in complete control of their vocal abilities, which only adds to the lushness of this standard. After you revisit what beautiful music can be, make sure you give it up one time to Burt Bacharach.

  1. Excellent. Just what I needed- some real music! We need an album from her!

  2. Wow that was awesome. I admit that I was worried about whether Lauryn would still sound good but she and Ron both did an excellent job on this one.

  3. A testament to a well-written song is that it's impossible to mess up. This is a great version, but Gerald LeVert and Tamia threw down on this song a few years ago.

  4. Was it just me or was I the only one just dreading that R. Kelly was gonna pop up in this song midway with some "This is Mr. Big, how you doing Mr. Big" shit:-) Burt Bacharach is a legend, a absolute legend

  5. Bacharach gets huge respect and rightly so.
But show Hal David some love too.
The man wrote some beautiful lyrics.

  6. These are two of my favorite artists. I absolutely love the Isley Brothers. And what more can you say about Lauryn.
That being said... I think both fail to capture the wistful emotion of this song. I don't know if it's the mastering on their voices or what, but something is off.

  7. It sounds off becuase Ron did this in 2003 with Burt Bachrach. Lauryn's vocals were recenlty added. NOT A DUET!

  8. There's real hope for Ron Isley's new album. That was really enjoyable, but I expect nothing less from Burt Bacharach. That's like working with David Foster: the production will ALWAYS be flawless.

  9. This is lovely...absolutely lovely!

  10. It's hard to screw up a Bacharach/David song, you have to stick with the lyric and the melody is usually pretty tight so less is more, which is al;ways a novelty nowadays.
    Lovely.

  11. Wow..it's been a while since I've heard a duet that has moved me in R&B...I have a thing about the Masters..we have so few left so it's like going to the candy store when you hear something like this...Return of the remake ???? hmmm
