37th State Updates Fela's Afrobeat For A New Generation

Afrobeat is a genre of music that I'm not all that familiar with. I'm sorry to say that even the music of Fela Kuti--the father of afrobeat--has passed me by. There has been renewed interest in the genre lately thanks to the success of the musical FELA!, and so it seems somewhat fitting that a new compilation of original material, inspired by the music of Kuti, is set for release. Helmed by famed afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and Fela's original keyboardist Dele Sosimi, the album features a host of established UK and US talent including Ty, Terri Walker, Slum Village, Lyric L, and Keziah Jones amongst others. The 37th State Compilation will be released on February 8th (US Bouncers can pre-order here), but you can take a listen to the track "Why" featuring Tony Allen, Dele Sosimi, and spoken word artist Lisa Lore below. As for me, I'm off to dig out some Fela right now.
