Do 'You' 'Love' This Cee-Lo Green Leak?

My opinion is admittedly biased when it comes to Cee-Lo Green and his latest reincarnation as a soulman. See, from my late teens to early 20s, I considered him and his Goodie Mob cohorts to be one of the saving graces for the southern hip hop movement of the '90s. Although he'd flex his singing chops every now and then on a song or two, I've always thought his voice was more suitable for rhyming. So when he started venturing into more experimental vocal territory, I sat back and patiently waited for the phase to pass and he'd return to his rapping roots. However, after the success he found as one half of the duo Gnarls Barkley and more recently, as a solo act, I'm slowly realizing that my wish may never come true. For the time being, he's traded in the more controversial image found on personal Goodie Mob faves such as "Cell Therapy," "Fly Away," and "Beautiful Skin" for a more palatable role as the fun-loving soulful crooner behind the monstrous (and over-hyped, IMO) success of last year's "F--k You." And that's cool.

His latest track to hit the innanets is a synth-heavy number called "You Promised Me Love." Rumored to be a throwaway from his last album, The Lady Killer, the song would easily fit in with the rest of the songs. Cee-Lo sings his heart out to an ex who left him high, dry and without her love. The emo, lovestruck Cancer in me fell instantly for the lyrics, proving that while his topics and focus have shifted, the man can still pen the hell out of a song. And though his gravel-voiced singing is still not my cup of tea, I found myself liking this song way more than I thought I would. Maybe after all this time, his earnestness is finally breaking me down.
