For the past year, super-producer Mark de Clive-Lowe has been taking LA music heads to CHURCH. The monthly event, held every first Sunday, has quickly garnered a reputation for being the place to be to hear an ecclectic blend of sounds ranging from acoustic jazz, improvised electronic beats sessions, and live DJ sets. And having surprise guests ranging from Robert Glasper, Louie Vega, Leon Ware, and more pop up hasn't hurt its reputation either. With all that in mind, there's no doubt that MdCL is going to pull out all the stops when he celebrates the event's first anniversary at Angel's Piano Bar in Santa Monica this Sunday, October 2nd. However, if you're nowhere close to the West Coast, like myself, then have no fear; Mark is giving us the next best thing, a mixtape to get you through the weekend. Available for free download on his SoundCloud page, the nearly hour-long mix features some of his favorite jazz artists and then some. Tunes from Max Roach, Sun Ra, Ahmad Jamal, and even gospel's Kim Burrell are included. Surely not the same as being at the event in the flesh, but I'll gladly settle for these sounds all the same.
