Hailing from my hometown of Birmingham, UK, it took a trip across the Atlantic to the pages of BamaLoveSoul for me to discover Genius Collective. The seven-piece funk and soul outfit got together last year and are currently hard at work on their debut release, E=GC2, penciled in for an early 2012 release. In the meantime they are busy gigging and writing original material, as well as paying tribute to some of their idols. A trip to their Bandcamp page uncovers their version of The Roots and Erykah Badu's classic "You Got Me" alongside an acoustic take on one of my favorite Amy Winehouse tracks "Stronger Than Me." As if that wasn't enough, they have also posted the first track from their upcoming album, "Future (Breaks)" to give people an idea of what they have in store. Lead singer Kezia Johnson has drawn comparisons to Amy as well as Jill Scott and it's plain to see why.
