After sitting patiently in the waiting room for them, New Zealand's own Funkommunity have finally released their long-anticipated debut album, Chequered Thoughts. Even though we've already experienced such sound tapestries as "Dandelion" and "Pass It On," the full project has been well worth the wait. From the sound of things producer Isaac Aesili and vocalist Rachel Fraser have made an excellent marriage of digital dub and peerless soul, and it's this expertise that is soaring Chequered Thoughts up on my best of 2012 list at current. If the album itself wasn't celebration enough, Funkommunity have released the album track "The Light" for the low price of free, and if you aren't fully aware of the duo and their brand of kiwi soul, then this percolating '80's inspired groove-a-thon is a great place to start. As we continue to marvel and wonder what the heck is in the water in New Zealand, in the meantime, make sure you snatch up Chequered Thoughts as it's available right now for purchase and download.
