Sophia Bastian is a name unfamiliar to me, but after diving head first and eyes open into the visual for her single "Breaking," strangers her and I will not be anymore. Spending her youth in Europe and finding footing in the Big Apple, Bastian gives the distinct air of an eclectic vagabond as her song "Breaking" is a hearty mix of classic soul and hip hop, but with a nice thick smear of bluesy-rock. Amid shadows and red light, Bastian springs life into the tangle of words and sounds and comes up artistically sound. Special effects and camera trickery aren't really needed as Bastian's crystal clear croon are all that is needed to evoke imagery and emotion. Expect to see more of Bastian as Juvenile Blues, her debut EP, is due out this fall.
