Seth Williams Sets Out To 'Race The Sun'

Today I and about 60 million Americans find ourselves bracing for Hurricane Sandy aka "Frankenstorm" aka "The Perfect Storm." Rain and storms are one of the best reasons to curl up to a good book or smooth playlist. The howling wind on Smokey Robinson's "Quiet Storm," the thunder on New Edition's "Can You Stand the Rain" and the rain on Herb Alpert's "Making Love in the Rain" help us enjoy brief showers in our lives. Seth Williams' jazzy instrumental, "Race the Sun," put me in a similar mind space on this rainy day. Seth's use of varying percussion instruments and complex arrangements reminded me of a Roy Ayers fusion project. But with this piece clocking in at 2:27, it is way too short to look at on its own. Even though an artist should strive to leave the audience wanting for more, he shouldn't leave them feeling as though the best parts of the piece were still to arrive. "Race the Sun" serves as a well-received and quickly accepted invitation to check out Seth's first, full-length instrumental offering, Journey to Love available now via Bandcamp, instead of something that should be judged on its own.
