Bilal Takes Us 'Too High'

Whatever you're doing right now, stop. Why? Because you'll want to focus all your attention on what I'm bringing your way. Soul crooner Bilal is prepping for the release of his latest album, A Love Surreal, early next year. To tide us over, Bilal is dropping The Retrospection, his mixtape curated by DJ/musician/tastemaker Vikter Duplaix and filled with some of his best moments throughout the years -- as well as some never before heard material. To that front, the collection's first single is "Too High." Yes, Bilal has delivered his own take on the Stevie Wonder classic. Singing over an instrumental from Madlib's Yesterday's New Quintet project, Bilal refashions the song's lyrics to fit his own *ahem* lifted sensibilities. Everything about his take, from the hazy delivery to the jazzy track, is exactly what you'd expect from something like this and just a little bit more. If you're already salivating for this set (and it can't be just me), then you'll be able to get your hands on it when The Retrospective drops next week. While I consider what else the mixtape could bring (if you're reading this, B, it'd be nice to finally hear the never released Bilal/Badu collab "Props to the Lonely People"), "Too High" awaits for your listening -- and downloading -- pleasure below.
