Bilal Has His Way With Prince's 'Sister'

Last night was yet another reminder that I need to pack up and move back to New York City or get a MegaBus hookup with the quickness. You see, NYC's Carnegie Hall was the setting on Thursday night for the all-star Prince tribute concert curated by Questlove. The lineup was sick (D'Angelo, Alice Smith, Citizen Cope, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Talib Kweli) and the house band was even sicker (The Roots). If that wasn't enough, adding to my saltiness is the fact that on Wednesday night there was an open rehearsal for the big show at City Winery to a packed house who got the ultimate sneak peek. One of the tribute's performers in particular showed out with his manic live rendition of one of Prince's most salacious songs. SoulBounce fave Bilal went HAM on "Sister" from 1980's Dirty Mind with the Legendary Roots Crew backing and Wendy Melvoin, she of The Revolution and Wendy & Lisa fame, on guitar. In Bilal's hands, the dirty little ditty bounced from one genre to the next and became an experience. Don't just take my word, though, watch this video captured by the Okayplayer team to experience for yourself.
