Bounce-Worthy: A K U A

Every time I feel that I have reached my quota of alternative/electronic/whatever soul dukes and dames there is always a new voice, a new approach to the evolving genre that waltzes in forcing me to make room for more of the electric soul I adore. Not that I'm complaining, because if I turned a blind eye, talented new acts like A K U A would never come into my conscious. Born in London and raised in Montreal, A K U A was like most, attracted the music bug early on but had difficulty finding her place in the spin. We should all be glad that the once-apprehensive singer got the courage to come out from the background singing shadows to the forefront to concoct her own material, plus put her earthy, rich tone to proper use. Her newfound boldness is paying off as not only has she opened for the variant likes of Katy B and Cody ChesnuTT, but has a forthcoming EP, One's Company, debuting on June 4th. On the strength of hearing two of One's Company tracks, and a scattering of demos on her SoundCloud page, it's evident Akua is keen on vast and ambient synth soundscapes that are peppered with shades of soul and hip hop and unexpected tempo changes that give songs depth. You may have heard it all before, as there are many who are attempting this particular sound, but Akua is one in a million, doing things her unique and eclectic way, and it's reason why this singer-songwriter is one to keep eye and ear out for. Listen to SoulBounce's exclusive premiere of the track "Push" right now, and get submerged after the bounce as A K U A takes us into the life aquatic for the video of mesmerizing single "Gravity."
