Active Child Unleashes 'Rapor'

After hearing the lead-off single "Subtle," I was ready for Active Child's Raptor project to be unleashed. Flash to a month later, well, I don't think I was as prepared as I thought, as Active Child (birth certificate name, Pat Grossi) has assembled six songs that are so spacious and well-heeled that this EP manages to feel more like an album with every play. For an '80s new wave lover like me, Rapor is pretty much nostalgia nirvana, as it's packed with atmospheric synths and moody rhythms that just seem to stretch out and take over. Sticking out (and still the best) is the frosted funk of "Subtle" with Mykki Ekko, but "Calling In the Name of Love" evokes nicely some Touch-era Eurythmics. Ellie Goulding, who re-imagined Active Child's "Hanging On," is present on the project as well, as she shares the vocal spotlight on "Silhouette," a roomy ballad with a backdrop and structure that feels icy and disenchanted like Sinead O'Connor's classic version of "Nothing Compares 2 U." So if you find yourself a little bit moody and want a little synthesizer in your life, then you should hop over the bounce to take Rapor for a test drive before it's officially released October 21st via iTunes
