KING Take It 'Slow' In Tribute To Fela Kuti

Over a year ago, we got a preview of the Red Hot Foundation's latest dip into the catalog of Fela Kuti with tUnE-yArDs, Angelique Kidjo, Questlove and Akua Nara's take on the Afrobeat pioneer's "Lady." Now that the Red Hot + Fela project has been released, we can now get a taste of what other acts have brought to the table. SoulBounce's favorite trio KING took on Fela's "Go Slow" from his Rororofo Fight album and while the KING ladies don't seem like an obvious choice to cover the track, they cast their supernatural energy over the song effortlessly. Using their atmospheric approach to R&B, they slow the tempo of the track a bit, layering it with harmonies and ghostly backing vocals that transform the song's conversational call-and-response into a quiet plea to the masses. While it can be argued that it alters the song's message just a bit, I feel that KING's take truly reinterprets the spirit of the original and makes the message all their own. See if you agree when you listen below and be sure to pick up Red Hot + Fela on iTunes and Amazon now. [H/T: KN]
