We 'Hope' Rebecca Ferguson Has A Few Tricks Up Her Sleeve For Her Sophomore Set

Hailed as the most "credible" act to surface from the UK's version of the X Factor has certainly done Rebecca Ferguson a few favors, with her debut album Heaven pleasing both fans and critics alike. Later this year Ferguson will follow up with her sophomore release Freedom, and we have a taste of what's to come with the project's lead single "I Hope." Falling into the inoffensive but safe category (alongside most of her debut) the track certainly highlights Ferguson's impressive vocals but, in my opinion at least, it is pretty forgettable. The problem with reality music shows is that those who ultimately come out of the other side with a record deal do not really know themselves musically. They have spent a few weeks singing cover versions that adhere to whatever the show's chosen theme is for that week and then they are catapulted into a studio alongside A-list writing/production teams to generate a polished album that will appeal to the masses rather than carving out their own niche. Granted, Rebecca co-wrote Heaven, but it has that squeaky clean sheen that the likes of Eg White, Fraser T Smith and Xenomania typically lend to a project and that's the problem; their songs often adhere to a standard formula and come off sounding, well formulaic (unless they are pulling out all the stops for someone like Adele). Unfortunately "I Hope" falls in to the same traps as her previous material, which is a shame because she does have a unique voice that would really benefit from some original songwriting and production. Here's hoping that Freedom isn't just a generic title, but a real state of mind for the talented singer.
