Rihanna Flaunts Her 'Diamonds' & Becomes An Icon At The 2013 American Music Awards

I'm sure that we here at SBHQ weren't the only ones who had side eyes aplenty upon hearing that Rihanna would receive the inaugural Icon Award at the 2013 American Music Awards. Don't get me wrong, she is quite accomplished in her eight short years in the music industry, but an icon? Nah. But the AMAs saw it fit to award her this first ever accolade so we'll just go with their flow. Rihanna maximized the moment last night with a performance of her hit song "Diamonds" in the midst of her Icon Award presentation. She sounded like her usual self, no surprise there, but what had tongues wagging was her unique choice of a hairstyle. Opting to rock a doobie wrap secured with pearled bobby pins, RiRi gave Black girl realness -- all that was missing was a scarf tied around her head to really keep her 'do in place. Later in the segment, Bill Maher came out to introduce the person who'd be presenting Rihanna with the Icon Award and it was none other than her mother, Monica Braithwaite. Love or hate her, you have to admit that it was a touching moment between mother and daughter, and her ensuing thank you speech was sincere and humble, words that don't often come to mind when referring to Rihanna.
