On his third album Where Does This Door Go, Mayer Hawthorne disposed of the retro-soul tag that had been pinned on him. Replacing it with a unique and multifaceted sound, Hawthorne combined everything from the yacht vibes of Steely Dan ("Reach Out Richard") to hip hop ("Crime") and a touch of Hall & Oates ("Back Seat Lover"). Whichever influence was called upon as Hawthorne paved the path to his own true sound, the result was something he shouldn't be closing the door on.
