Should Marsha Ambrosius Put Her 'Pride' Aside?

Marsha STP Still

You have to commend Marsha Ambrosius. The lady has guts. She challenged societal norms with the  same-sex love affirming clip for "Far Away" and even thumbed her nose at rumors about her sexuality with the video for "F--k and Get It Over With." But now the former songstress of Floetry is taking on her most controversial feat yet: Covering a Sade song. For her upcoming sophomore set Friends & Lovers, Marsha has elected to cover the timeless Sade classic "Stronger Than Pride." But does she do it justice? Unfortunately, no. The problem here is she updates the song with a hip-hop beat (a Jeru the Damaja flip, for those interested) that completely drains the song of the original's emotional resonance.

Kudos to her for the track's video, however. The black-and-white clip plays the last tryst between two lovers backwards, going from the throes of love to the very beginning, when Marsha walks in the door and discovers incriminating evidence in the back pocket of her fella's pants. While the effort is appreciated, especially with Marsha capturing how complicated love is with the song's video, we just wish we liked her take on the song more. But, of course, we're not the end all be all in musical opinion. Check out the video for "Stronger Than Pride" and then let us know what you think about Marsha's take.
