The multitalented youngster just had his song “Don’t Call This Love” from his upcoming album remixed by Sh?m (possibly pronounced Shem Question Mark, if his semi-NSFW Tumblr is to be believed). What was once a simple yarn of yearning and an ode to being more than just being more than friends, gets the space-age treatment, with bleeping and blipping taking the song’s message to intergalactic heights. What brings it back down to Earth are the slowed, nearly chopped-and-screwed vocals and the minimalist acoustics of kick snares and finger snaps. But what once again makes it otherworldly is the hypnotic and filtered trip-hop melody.
A member of the Darker Than Wax collective, Sh?m succeeds in reimagining “Don’t Call This Love” in a way that is familiar, but also “take notice” fresh -- and is worth a spin on this or other astral planes.
