You may remember Melbourne soul outfit The Putbacks from their cover of "Spanish Harlem"" with Hiatus Kaiyote frontwoman Nai Palm, which was released earlier this year. Now they are gearing up to release their album, Dawn, with indigenous Australian soul singer Emma Donovan.
In the lead up to the album's early November release date, the band has released the video for the first single, "Daddy." The visuals see close-up shots of Donovan flowing into warped, somewhat psychedelic images of inner city urban dwellings. The simple yet effective video is perfectly in sync with "Daddy," a fast-paced, wah-wah guitar-filled, percussion-driven number that echoes the sounds of heavy soul and rock circa the '70s.
While the infectious rhythm will instantly capture your attention, Donovan's raw, soulful vocals are equally as commanding of the listener's attention, as she conveys struggle and strength effortlessly.
