K’Jon Sings Of Love & That’s ‘A Beautiful Thing’

As we enter the last few weeks of White Party Season (aka, summer), K’Jon has a little somethin’ for all the steppers out there. Less than a year after dropping an album of all-new material, the Detroit native is back at it in the studio. And his latest single, “A Beautiful Thing,” gives us a taste of what to expect from his forthcoming album, Without A Woman.

After multiple listens, I still can’t shake the feeling that something about this song sounds stale. I mean, it’s certainly not horrible (thanks to the singer’s smooth vocals). But it’s not “fresh,” either. Ocean Man recently stated on Facebook, “I don't know if you can hear it in my music or not, but I'm in a different place now. I understand where I wanna go with this.” Really, sir? Because it sounds like you’re in the same place to me. Maybe the rest of the new album will prove otherwise.

Whether I’m a fan or not, I have to admit, K’Jon knows his audience (Chicago steppers, Detroit ballroom dancers, etc.) and delivers what they want. While he has yet to match the widespread appeal of his 2009 “On The Ocean" debut, my guess is that his loyal fans are quite content with whatever he puts out. And in the end, that’s a beautiful thing.
