Pharrell Scopes Out His 'It Girl' In An Anime Wonderland

What I like most about Pharrell is that he's not afraid to get his geek on, and with the visual for "It Girl," I think he hits nerd nirvana as he indulges in his love for Japanese anime, and when I say indulges in it, I mean, he severely indulges in it.

Teaming up with artist pal Takashi Murakami and director Fantasista Utamaro, "It Girl" bursts with electric technicolor and acidic Kawaii couture as Pharrell crashes into the digital display skateboarding, riding whales and even turning his Dudley Do-Right chapeau into a object of magic. Yeah, it's a crazy swirl of images and fantasies that has the nostalgic feeling of stepping into an old school SEGA game.

Pharrell continues to wax poetic to the ladies, though this time, instead of marveling the various human beauties like he does in  "Come Get It Bae" and "Marilyn Monroe," he's digging on these simulated girls. I'm not one of the cool kids who knows a ton about Japanese anime and its culture, but my spidey senses are going off about these video "it girls" looking no more than 12 years of age, with several shots of Pharrell instant messaging these girls and sneaking looks from behind a palm tree does border an episode of Law & Order: SVU. But if over-analyzing and political correctness aren't your game, then there is a lot to like (and trip out on) in this kaleidoscopic visual experience where East meets West.
