"Sunshine house" spinster Freddy Verano recently revealed "Moments," his collaboration with SoulBounce favorite Sam Smith. The melody on the German DJ/producer's track includes many of the essentials of a soulful house tune to accompany the soul-sung vocals of Smith: uplifting finger snaps, a foundation full of piano keys and a little bit of garage-style two-step for increased funk.
The lyrics present plenty of opportunities for Sam to flex his vocal muscle and their content plays with the concept of time. Throughout the song, the duality of moments lost and moments yet to be had intersect with feelings of keeping pride intact against unapologetic longing. At the same time, each moment gained is a moment lost, and each serves to bring Sam and the object of his affection closer while also pulling them apart.
It's a clever approach that might force house heads to do more thinking than should be required on the dance floor. But then again, the ability to pack the floors with its beat as well as minds with its ideas could be another trick from the tune with multiple meanings.
