At a time when many rappers are putting their feelings on the state of hip-hop on Twitter rather than on wax, New Orleans MC Dee-1 drops “Thee Pledge,” a challenge to both rappers and rap fans to stand against negativity in hip-hop and hold the music to a higher standard. He echoes the refrain that “accountability is needed” in order to change the direction of hip-hop music. “Thee Pledge” features contributions from reggae artist Mansa Musa and production from E.F. Cuttin.

Dee-1 first gained notoriety in 2010 with a similarly themed track “Jay, 50, and Weezy,” which caught the attention of Manny Fresh, among others, and ultimately led to Dee-1’s signing with the RCA Inspiration brand in 2013. This track is the first offering in anticipation of his forthcoming EP, 3’s Up, scheduled for release on February 17th. Are you willing to take "Thee Pledge"?
