Venerable jazz label Blue Note Records continues to showcase its forward-thinking approach to music, boasting an expanding roster of artists that can't be contained by one genre. SoulBounce faves like Robert Glasper, Gregory Porter, Otis Brown III, José James call the label home, so it was no surprise to learn they signed buzz-garnering newcomer Kandace Springs. Make no mistake, Ms. Springs is not your average artist. I mean, not everyone can say they received a personal invitation to perform at Paisley Park from the Purple One himself. The gifted singer/songwriter/pianist wasted no time getting to work on her self-titled debut EP, a perfect showcase of her versatility. Serving up a musical buffet of electric funk ("Love Got in the Way"), nuanced sensuality ("Forbidden Fruit"), jazz hop stylings ("West Coast"), and breezy soul ("Meet Me in the Sky"), she has definitely left us thirsty for her full-length album, due later this year. -- B.
