From touring with Common and Jay Electronica to teaching vocal and songwriting workshops, Maimouna Youssef hustled in 2014 and still had the time to redefine fresh with her mixtape The Reintroduction of Mumu Fresh. The multi-talented rapper/songstress hopped on her soap box to touch on social, racial, political, gender and class issues — and accomplished it all without us pressing the snooze button. The femcee kept us woke with her inventive lyrics and smooth vocals, flipping well-known hits to help fulfill her righteous purposes. The 20-track mixtape was an ode to hip-hop and the African diaspora that reminded us that we were indeed royal and solidified that Maimouna was too. -- Mercy
