Her latest single, which is fresh out of the oven and only a few days old, explores bright, futuristic soundscapes. Aptly titled “Beauty,” this is future soul that is right up there with genre standouts such as Robert Glasper and Hiatus Kaiyote. The track flows with an upbeat energy, up until three-quarters of the way through when it takes a gritty, heavier vibe just to remind the listener that there is so much more to Wallace and her music than what is on the surface. Accompanying Wallace on the track is MC Sampa The Great, who blesses the track with her powerful, poetic rhymes. This is music that gives more and more with each listen, as the listener takes in all the little nuances and details that all fit together like a puzzle.
Two songs down and let’s hope Wallace continues to deliver goodies that pirouette all over hearts, just as she sings about on “Vinyl Skip.” Creating music that makes souls sing is what this Kiwi wonder does best, and with an EP dropping later in the year, Wallace is definitely an artist whose name and voice you won’t want to forget.
