We started hearing rumblings of Devin Tracy’s Goodafternoon EP with the release of his take on Kendrick Lamar and JaVonte’s “She Needs Me.” Now that the release of the final project is inching closer, Tracy has released a new track to remind us of the good tidings that will soon come our way with a mashup called “What You Won’t Do For Love.”
For “What You Won’t Do For Love,” Tracy combines lyrics from Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do” and Mary J. Blige’s “Love No Limit” and repurposes them over The Pharcyde’s classic “Runnin'” instrumental produced by the unfortunately late but oh so great J Dilla. While Tracy has proven he’s got some pretty impressive pipes, he really stands out here and enlists guest vocalist Anais Aida on background vocals and harmonies. Coupled with the production, which features scratches, breaks and other flourishes, the final result is a mashup that sounds more like a well-orchestrated blend of musical genres and styles that create a cohesive whole and show Mr. Tracy's deft ear and hand.
We can expect Goodafternoon to drop sometime before the end of October. In the meantime, “What You Won’t Do For Love” is a great dance floor-ready groove to help you reminisce on good times past and party the night away.
