'Don't' Sleep On What Sevyn Streeter Brings To This Bryson Tiller Cover

After dropping her EP Shoulda Been There, Pt. 1, Sevyn Streeter has been a busy girl. For one, she's been on a seven-city tour in support of the project. As well, she's started her "Switch" series, in which she puts her own unique and feminine spin on hot records by some of her male contemporaries. For the third entry in the series, Sevyn takes on R&B upstart Bryson Tiller's record "Don't."

Just like the original, Sevyn's take finds her kicking game something serious to someone she feels deserves better than what he's getting. She lets him know in no uncertain terms that he deserves everything he's been missing, and she's the perfect one to give it to him. Something about Sevyn's sweet voice singing some of the song's dirtier elements sets this cover off completely. But what also works are the harmonies that Sevyn brings to the table, adding a bit of warmth to the song's cool, robotic groove. When the slowed down vocal kicks in near track's end, rather tham ride out the beat, she layers her own vocal on top of it, creating a hypnotic effect that's quite alluring.

While we're still waiting on Sevyn to deliver a proper debut album, her EP and this covers series are more than enough to tide us over. You can stream her take on "Don't" right here and head to her SoundCloud page to check out the other covers in the series.
