Man, listen. Cool Uncle might've been one of the most slept-on highlights of 2015. Sure. On paper, Cool Uncle – the surprise partnership of Jack Splash and Bobby Caldwell – makes perfect sense. And yes, we were loving the album leaks which featured collaborations with Jessie Ware ("Break Away") and Deniece Williams and Eric Biddines ("Breaking Up"). But with the flurry of new music that dropped left and right during the holiday season, the dynamic duo temporarily slipped off our radar. But now the artistic duo has reminded us to revisit the collaborative gem with the release of their debut video for "Mercy."
The stunning ballad, featuring fellow innovator CeeLo Green, is a heartfelt plea for a second chance. Caldwell's soulful croon reveals he's "not the man I used to be" over Splash's production of warm synth and '80s drums. The singer continues, "Have pity, pity on me / I will be here on bended knee," before CeeLo adds "You've always been the only one / I'm sorry for the things I've done." Both singers sound amazing on the track that Caldwell calls "a personal favorite," effectively using their distinctive voices to tug at our heart strings.
For such a tender and emotional song, one would expect a dramatic scene to play out on the small screen. But the inventive pair offers an alternative perspective with a claymation treatment by Joe and Mike Baughman. Based on a concept by Jack Splash, we find the trio performing at the zoo. But in a reversal of roles, they're the ones on display as the animals stop to examine the "creatures" that are safely confined behind bars. Peep the animated visuals below (you haven't lived until you've seen a panda "make it rain") and add some dopeness to your playlist by grabbing a copy of Cool Uncle today. While we wait for more goodies from Cool Uncle, you can also catch Bobby Caldwell and CeeLo Green on their respective tours.
