Whenever Mother's Day comes around, you're pretty much guaranteed to hear a dedicated block of "mama-themed" songs across the airwaves. From indispensable standards like The Intruders' "I'll Always Love My Mama" and The Spinners' "Sadie" to modern classics like Tupac's "Dear Mama" and Boyz II Men's "A Song For Mama," it's nice to have some options for a melodic tribute when Hallmark just won't do.

Well, our main man Aaron "Ab" Abernathy is looking to freshen up our playlists this year with his own heartfelt paean titled "Favorite Girl." He explains, "I wrote this record to show my mother how much I appreciate her and her impact on my life and I’m more than sure other people feel the same as I do." Brimming with expressive strings, funk-injecting bass and guitar, fluid keys and rhythmic percussion, the track is immediately endearing with its throwback soul vibe. Though the lyrics are clearly inspired by Ab's own amazing mother (peep the cover art's awwww-inducing #TBT photo of them), the uptempo groove is a celebration of all the influential women in our lives.

Ab finished the track right on time as he and his band Nat Turner are about to head overseas with Black Milk for The Rebellion Tour in support of their collaborative project The Rebellion Sessions. Listen to the uplifting tune below, then head over to iTunes to purchase a copy for your own "Favorite Girl." Check Ab's website for tour dates (both locally and abroad), get caught up on his current catalogue (including the powerful "Now A Days") via Bandcamp and be sure to follow him on Twitter and Instagram for updates on forthcoming new music.
