Erykah Badu's 'Been Goin Thru It All'

We don't know if you've been paying attention to what's been going on with Erykah Badu and her Twitter account as of late (though we're sure you can find more than a few thinkpieces on the subject), but it seems that the Dallas native has once again caused controversy. Perhaps inspired by that backlash her tweets have caused (or maybe in spite of it), Ms. Badu decided to celebrate yesterday's stoner holiday by dropping new song "I Been Goin Thru It All." The song, a cover of rapper Wintertime's mumble-y underground hit, shows a different side of Badu.

Utilizing the song's original production, Erykah adopts Wintertime's lazy cadence to talk her ish as she details her problems. She alludes to the Twitter kerfuffle and a few other recent moments (including her recent FADER cover), letting us know that this one is fresh of the presses. And while her 420 high might be coming down, the slow pace and atmospheric feel of the song is probably the perfect soundtrack for a smoke session or two. Erykah, who has been a proponent of hip hop since her Apples days, has never shied from the influence of the sound on her own music. But perhaps the most interesting thing about this cover, besides her take on this style, is that she uses her influence to shout out Wintertime (whose original has over two million plays on SoundCloud and counting) and perhaps introduce him to a much larger audience.

Erykah has said that she's working on another mixtape to follow last year's But You Cain't Use My Phone, tentatively titled This $h!t Too Easy. Maybe "I Been Goin Thru It All" will make the cut? Take a listen below and let us know if you think it should.
