Tinashe Keeps Her Torch Burning With 'Flame'

We really want Tinashe to win. Since announcing her sophomore set Joyride way back in 2015, she's released single after single but no signs of the album's official release date have materialized. But don't count the effort out just yet. Our girl seems intent on bringing her vision forward and hits us with yet another single, "Flame," to ready us for what's to come.

The first thing that catches your attention is that this is poppiest the California native has ever sounded. She sheds her hip-hop and R&B tinged sound for straight-up pop on the mid-tempo number. It starts with a slow burn at first, with synths whispering in the background on the verse before being joined by electronic rumbling as they soar on the chorus. Lyrically, Tinashe is looking to be reminded that her beau is carrying a torch for their love. While a slightly different sound for the singer, she adapts quite well to the change in musical backdrop, delivering the proper vocal and feel that is all the rage in current Top 4o pop.

In addition to the release of "Flame," Tinashe also shared news that she is the newest artist to join Pepsi's Sound Drop campaign. Her participation in the campaign will see her and Jidenna make an upcoming appearance on Fox's runaway hit Empire playing themselves as they help Jamal (Jussie Smollett) create a visual album. It's obvious that Tinashe is aiming for the mainstream with her recent moves, but do you think she'll succeed? Judge for yourself by giving "Flame" a spin below.
