Count us among the fans who were totally disappointed when Osunlade revealed that 2011's Pyrography would be his last house album. Thankfully, he was kind enough to soften the blow through a steady stream of DJ sets, remixes and collaborations all on top of production duties and oversight of his Yoruba Records label. But more importantly, he has continued to make original music as well like the monolithic single "Dionne" and full-length aural hybrids like A Man With No Past Originating The Future and Peacock. His impressive output now continues with his newest solo project, an all-too-brief EP entitled The Quieter You Become, The More You Hear.
Simply described as "moments I wanted to share," Osunlade embarks on a contemplative sonic journey and allows us to tag along for the ride. Don't let the title fool you into thinking this is a project full of ambient sounds and sparse instrumentation. There are "quiet" moments, yes – but more than anything, he proves that the introspective doesn't necessarily mean sedate with tracks such as "Stl6," "The Bravest," "Syrundipity" and "Duh/Geyt/Daouhn" (The Get Down) eliciting head nods that stimulate the brain and open the mind to deeper understanding.
With the exception of DJ/Producer Mike Steva lending a hand for album-opener "Recovery," the entire project was written, performed and produced by Osunlade himself. We're certainly glad that Yoruba Soul music is still going strong and hope this a sign of more new music to come. For now, though, we're content to give The Quieter You Become, The More You Hear multiple listens. And though the "Name Your Price" offer translates to "free" for many of us, we encourage you to dig a little deeper and show our indie artists some love.
