Veteran acts like New Edition, Xscape and Mary J. Blige were undoubtedly the toast of BET Awards 17. But newcomers like Jessie Reyez put us on notice that they are not to be slept on. The Canadian-Colombian singer-songwriter held the audience captive with an acoustic rendition of her 2016 hit "Figures" from her debut EP Kiddo.

With her casual style and honest storytelling, Reyez slightly reminds us of fellow young Canadian Alessia Cara. Relaying the tale of a cheating ex, she also possesses a wounded vulnerability that brings Amy Winehouse to mind. Mix in the soulful rasp of Bibi Bourelly and Rihanna's unapologetic sass, and it's a winning combination for sure. But none of these comparisons would mean anything if Ms. Reyez didn't have the talent to back it up. And believe us, she does. Yes, there are similarities to the previously-mentioned singers, but she enthralled us with her unique tone and an earnest performance. In short, Jessie Reyez is definitely one to watch.
