Lalah Hathaway is always a welcome sight around SBHQ, especially when she's bringing us some newness. The songstress has a lot going on this year. In less than a week, she'll be on the road with Mary J. Blige as the supporting act on her Strength Of A Woman Tour. But that's not all, she's also gearing up to drop her next album, Honestly. Our first listen to the new project comes in the form of her brand new single, the appropriately titled "I Can't Wait."
We're used to hearing Lalah over lovely ballads and smoothed-out R&B jams, but she takes a slightly different approach on "I Can't Wait." She switches her style up with a bouncy, breezy modern R&B vibe. Synths and hi-hats are the main musical components here, with piano coming in to add a bit more melody on the chorus. Lalah's voice, however, is the center of it all. She sings about having a love that has her anticipating each and every moment. "From the moment I wake each morning / I can't wait to see you smilin'," she sings. "It makes my whole world." It's a sweet sentiment in a song that's full of them, with Lalah's laid-back performance still capturing that anxious feeling you get when you're near the one you love.
Speaking on the song in a statement, Lalah said, “I really want to express to people, since there is so much dark s**t happening right now, that music is truly this train that you can hop on to transport yourself to having a good time. This song is intended to make people feel good and that is not something to be neglected in this moment.”
