Pop diva Mariah Carey raised several eyebrows in 1994 with the announcement that her fourth studio album would be the holiday-themed Merry Christmas. But upon release of the lead single, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," she forever silenced the skeptics with a crowd-pleasing classic that went on to reach multi-platinum status across the globe. Today, at almost a quarter century old, the inescapable tune – which has been featured in holiday movies, television commercials, retail stores and ice-skating rinks from here to the North Pole – shows no signs of wear.
In 2015, the song was re-imagined as an illustrated children's book. The success of that venture has now spawned Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, an animated film narrated and executive produced by the singer herself. The movie tells the story of little Mariah, who has her heart set on receiving a pet store puppy named "Princess" for Christmas. In an attempt to prove that she can be responsible, she agrees to dog-sit her uncle's dog, a scraggly rascal named Jack. We can all guess what happens next. Hijinks ensue, lessons are learned and the true spirit of Christmas leaves us feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
Naturally, the movie comes with its own soundtrack centered around "All I Want For Christmas Is You." The song appears twice on the album, in its original form and as a show-stopping remake by young Australian sensation Brianna Yde (the voice of animated Mariah). In addition to instrumentals, a song by Raven's Home's Issac Ryan Brown, and two other tracks from her previous seasonal albums, Carey also provides a new holiday original called "Lil Snowman." There are no previews of the new music, but the descriptive press which hints, "Over gusts of snow-kissed production, the iconic superstar carries chilly and catchy verses before delivering a warm and wonderful chorus, stirring up a blizzard of fun in the process," certainly has our curiosity piqued.
We know Mimi has released some questionable small screen holiday content in the past, but she's still the reigning Queen of Christmas music. Besides, this one sounds like fun for the whole family. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is available for pre-order ahead of its November 10th release.
