India.Arie Speaks Out Against Neil Portnow's 'Step Up' Comments
The GRAMMYs have come and gone, but not without their fair share of controversy. But perhaps the most controversial moment came when Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, when asked about the lack of female winners at this year's ceremony, stated that women needed to "step up" in order to be successful. This, of course, sparked the ire of the many talented women in the music industry. Many women, including Pink and Katy Perry, have spoken out against the statements, the latest being India.Arie. She had many salient points in her statement, but she addressed Portnow directly with the following: "Neil Portnow is mistaken. His statements are a mess, but I get why he can't empathize with women and women of color. HE is saying, the more women there are, the more chances women have to WIN." #WomenBeenSteppingUp
