It's been four years since D'Angelo surprised fans with Black Messiah, his first collection of new music after a 15-year wait. We were worried we might have to wait that long again for anything new from the "Really Love" singer until we heard his voice in a very unexpected place: Red Dead Redemption 2. The hotly anticipated video game sequel features D's latest song "Unshaken" as part of its soundtrack and soul music savvy gamers immediately took notice of the song's unheralded inclusion.
For those who aren't gamers, RDR2 is a Western-themed epic set in a time of outlaws, cowboys and other facets of the Wild Wild West. "Unshaken" fits the theme perfectly, with a guitar-driven melody accompanied by strums of bass and faint percussion. D'Angelo also goes subdued, giving his falsetto a break while utilizing his lower register for most of the track. Though he's switched up styles on us, his gospel-drenched delivery is in unmistakable form as he sings the song's resilient refrain, "May I stand unshaken amidst the crash of the world." It's not the new D that we expected, but it's definitely a quality track (and, honestly, we'll take anything that the reclusive artist wants to offer).
Rumors of D'Angelo working on a new project have been cropping up ever since he cancelled a London concert at the top of last year. Here's hoping there's much more where the rootsy gospel of "Unshaken" came from. Take a listen to the song below.
