Class is back in session for the second half of the second season of grown-ish, Freeform's black-ish spin-off that centers around the college shenanigans of Yara Shahidi's Zoey and her crew of friends. That crew also happens to include singing sibling duo Chloe x Halle, who play twin track stars Sky and Jazz on the show. But the show doesn't just feature the twosome flexing their acting muscles. The sisters also contributed the show's theme song "Grown" and just dropped two new songs that will be featured on this season, "Who Knew" and "Thinkin Bout Me."
For "Who Knew," the ladies have created a modern love ballad filled with airy synths and propulsive percussion. Despite the dynamic sound, the song is closer to quiet meditation than bombastic declaration. "I go cause my heart knows / Way before my mind's in tune / And I go where my heart goes / Didn't know it'd lead to you," they sing in hushed tones and breathy whispers at one point, making unexpectedly falling in love feel at once intimate and urgent. It's a much different approach than they take on "Thinkin Bout Me." Much more hip-hop influenced, the song is brasher, bolder and louder as the ladies assert themselves as they ask on the chorus, "Boy, what I make you think about doin'? / What I make you see when you're dreamin' / What I make you think about me?" Backing up their cockiness is a booming bass that rumbles speakers while the ladies try on singing cadences that mimic rappers spitting bars. The result is a welcome departure from what we've come to know of the sisters' work.
While their characters on grown-ish are growing and learning as the semesters pass, it seems that Chloe x Halle, too, are maturing musically and lyrically. We also can't wait to see how exactly these new tracks will be used in the series and how they apply to the show's plot during this season. Guess we'll have to watch to find out. While we set our DVRs, give the latest songs from Chloe x Halle a listen below.
