SoulBounce Exclusive: Brik.Liam Presents A Stylized Look At Black Love In 'Some Other Dude'

We have always been enamored with the musical stylings of up-and-comer Brik.Liam, even before he experienced a bit of a breakthrough with his last project The Ascension LP. That's why we couldn't be happier that he's picking up momentum this year. In July, he dropped "Some Other Dude," his first single released since signing to PJ Morton's Morton Records label. Now he's gearing up for the release of his new EP What's The Matter, Brik? by releasing the visual for the single — which SoulBounce is happy to bring to you exclusively.

Brik tapped photographer J.Taylor to helm the video, which first shows him and his leading lady lounging in black and white and cozying up to one another. The video then takes a turn for the artsy with a look and feel that reminds us of his video for "Gently." The couple is draped in matching monochromatic looks and put into poses and scenes that look like they're stills from a photographer's portfolio. That could be due to the fact that J.Taylor is a photographer by trade and this marks her debut as a video director. Her eye lends itself to some of the most arresting images we've seen in a music video in a long time.

"[The] 'Some Other Dude' visual’s intent is to display young black love," Brik.Liam said of the clip. "Heavily inspired by my love for photography, I wanted it shot in a way that the viewer could pause the video and witness an amazing and artistic photograph within the visuals."

He continued, "I wanted to make sure that it was directed by a black woman. Black women’s perspective and how they see themselves and love is super important to me because that’s my mother, my sisters, aunts, cousins, friends and main audience and priority, especially when they’re usually the world’s last priority. And with [J.Taylor] being a photographer and visionary, I knew she would see so many amazing things that I may have missed." Brik.Liam also pointed out that there are Easter eggs spread throughout the clip, including nods to Solange's work, a mirror motif and, of course, references to "Gently" and Brik's love for the color red.

In addition to dropping the clip for "Some Other Dude," the singer-songwriter also has more thrilling news: What's The Matter, Brik? will be arriving on October 18th. That means you have a little more that two weeks to prepare yourself for the dopeness Brik is sure to bring. We can't think of a better way to do that than watching our exclusive premiere of his newest video below.
