Looking back at 2019, it was a great year for music and an even better year for some key players. That latter group includes rapper/producer Tyler, The Creator. He garnered his first Billboard No. 1 album with the release of IGOR and gave us some jams like "EARFQUAKE," "I THINK" and "A BOY IS A GUN*." Knowing what we know of the album creation process, we can only imagine the songs that didn't make the cut. Well, we don't have to wonder about one cut, "Best Interest," which Tyler dropped for fans before the end of 2019.
"Best Interest" follows a similar format to the songs that appeared on IGOR. Over what sounds to be an old soul sample that's tweaked to match his style. Tyler then adds his own pitched-up vocal to the mix as he sings. The track starts off with him assuring his lover that there's no need to worry, though he describes himself as three troubling things. "I'm a third wheeler, I'm a side better, I'm a homewrecker," he sings before ironically singing, "I'll keep your best interest." Umm, OK. After a buildup, we get to hear his regular voice as he elaborates on his position, clarifying that he's the perfect dude to keep on the side as he'll never blow up your spot. Tyler even recorded a video for the track (and, impressively, did so without playing the music while he filmed it). Though it has nothing to do with the song, it's a cute look into the fun side of Tyler that shows his playful nature.
In addition to "Best Interest," Tyler also dropped another one-off track — "Group B" — that had nothing to do with IGOR and is just Tyler, The Creator talking his ish for two-minutes over a looped soul sample. Perhaps these two tracks were just released to cap off a great year for Tyler. Or maybe they might be a sign of things to come. We've got all year to find out.
