Some of the best and life-affirming insights can come out of our most painful experiences. Bounce-Worthy beauty KIRBY channeled the tragic loss of a family member into her single “Superpower” featuring D Smoke, released last fall. At a time when it is sometimes difficult to muster up the energy to showcase our Black Boy Joy or our Black Girl Magic, the vibrant track serves as a rousing reminder of our greatness. The Memphis-bred singer/songwriter explains, “This song is for the melaninated superheroes who walk this earth. Your skin is not your burden, your skin is not your curse, your skin is not your choice, BUT it is your Superpower.”
While KIRBY blessed us with a live performance of the single via the COLORS platform upon its release, she now returns with an equally moving visual to accompany it. Produced by Thrice Cooked Media and directed by David Karp and Courtney Loo, the feature captures KIRBY and D Smoke as they attend a funeral against a natural landscape. We watch them comfort family members, we follow them to the repast and watch them gather around the extensive feast that inevitably follows the burial at any Black funeral. Much like the track itself, the visual is a touching and hopeful reminder that our true power often lies in our resilience.
