See Rick James Like Never Before In 'Bitchin': The Sound And Fury Of Rick James'

There's larger-than-life and then there's Rick James. The soul and funk pioneer lived a life like no other, especially in his '70s and '80s heyday. A man that led a life so legendary is obviously deserving of a documentary about his life. Rick James is getting just that next month when Bitchin': The Sound And Fury Of Rick James lands on Showtime.

The documentary, helmed by Mass Appeal's Sacha Jenkins, mines archival footage of the late, great (and controversial) star — from his wild interviews and news stories to his infamous BET Awards acceptance speech — and mixes it with photos and interviews with those who knew him and were inspired by him. Some of the talking heads that appear include Ice CubeBig Daddy KaneJason King and Bootsy Collins. The biggest personality of all, of course, is Rick himself, who breaks down his art and influence like only he can. While it definitely looks to praise him for his musical prowess and trailblazing ways, it also doesn't seem to shy away from the dark side of his life, with mentions of not only his drug abuse but also his crimes (including a five-year jail stint for kidnapping and sexual assault). Either way you slice it, though, the documentary is going to be one hell of a ride.

Bitchin': The Sound And Fury Of Rick James will premiere on Showtime on September 3rd. You can watch the film's trailer and peep the poster for what's sure to be a television event below.
